CASE STUDY

A Project to Define Contemporary Elegance with Advanced Aluminium Systems Schüco ASE 80.HI and AWS 80 SC

This Case Study describes the implementation of a bespoke aluminium glazing package in a private residence in Harpenden (Hertfordshire). The Investor’s main goal was to complement the property’s new minimalist architecture with slim, energy-efficient systems that seamlessly blend the interior living spaces with the garden while ensuring the complex architectural glazing met the highest thermal performance standards.

CLINET BACKGROUND

Private Investor

The client, owning a detached property in the prestigious area of Harpenden, undertook a project to modernize their home into a “Modern Barn” style residence. The architectural vision featured clean white render and natural timber accents, requiring a glazing partner who could match this aesthetic with precision engineering. They needed a specialist capable of executing complex geometric designs—specifically for the upper floor—without compromising on the sleek, minimal look or the thermal comfort of the home.

Challenges

The project presented specific architectural and technical challenges that required premium solutions:

The master bathroom on the first floor featured a steep roofline. The challenge was to install a large, angled window that followed the roof pitch perfectly without using bulky profiles that would ruin the view from the freestanding bathtub.
For the kitchen, the design called for a “ribbon” window effect—a wide, uninterrupted view of the greenery with minimal visible framing.
The client wanted to remove the barrier between the living room and the terrace, requiring a large-scale sliding system that is easy to operate despite the weight of the glass.
Solution

To meet these rigorous demands, we curated a selection of Schüco systems and our premium door lines:

Upper Floor (Bathroom): We utilized the Schüco AWS 80 SC. This system was selected specifically for its incredibly narrow face widths. It allowed us to manufacture the custom angled shape required for the dormer while maximizing the glass area.

  • Kitchen: We installed the Schüco AWS 75 PD (Panorama Design). By using this system, we achieved the “frameless” aesthetic the client wanted, turning the garden view into a living picture.
  • Living Area: To open the house to the terrace, we fitted Schüco ASE 80.HI lift-and-slide doors. These provide exceptional thermal insulation and allow the heavy glass sashes to glide effortlessly.
  • Entrance: The front of the house was fitted with an aluminium door from our Modern Line series in RAL 7016 (Anthracite Grey), featuring vertical decorative panels that complement the window profiles.
RESULTS

Summary and Key Takeaways

The installation has defined the character of the home. The sharp contrast between the Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) aluminium elements and the white façade creates a striking modern look. The interior spaces are flooded with natural light, and the high-performance glazing ensures the home remains quiet and warm, regardless of the season.

Key Takeaways

Bespoke Solutions

Standard windows would not suffice here. The project success relied on customizing the Schüco AWS 80 SC system to fit the unique roof angles perfectly.

Architectural Harmony

Our role was to complement the architecture, not dominate it. The choice of slim profiles and concealed sashes allows the building's design to shine.

No Compromise on Warmth

This case study proves that you can have wall-to-wall glass in a British climate without sacrificing thermal comfort, thanks to High Insulated (HI) aluminium systems.
