CASE STUDY

A Project to Transform a Home into an Oasis of Light with Advanced Aluminum Joinery Systems Schüco AWS 70.HI and ASS 70.HI

This Case Study describes the comprehensive modernisation of the window and door joinery in a private residence in Barnet (North London). The Investor’s main goal was to transform the property into a modern, energy-efficient space that maximises natural light and connection to the surrounding greenery throughout the year.
CLINET BACKGROUND

Private Investor

The Client is a private Investor from Barnet who undertook a major modernisation and extension of their home to enhance their quality of life and the property’s value. The Client required solutions that combine modern, minimalist aesthetics (black profiles) with the highest technical parameters in thermal and acoustic insulation. A priority was creating a sense of seamless integration between the interior and the garden.
Elements

Key Solution Elements:

  • Contrasting Design: Slim, black aluminum profiles created the desired modern contrast with the bright facade and white interiors, while maximising the glass surface area.
  • Selective Glazing: Double-glazed units with solar control coatings were used, protecting the interiors from excessive heat gain in the summer while guaranteeing optimal natural light penetration.
  • Ergonomics and Ventilation: The combination of large fixed glazing with numerous tilt windows in various rooms provided not only light but also effective and convenient control over the home’s ventilation.
BEFORE - Challenges

Replacing Joinery with Energy-Efficient Solutions

The existing, outdated joinery did not meet contemporary energy efficiency standards, leading to high heating costs. The new solutions needed to radically improve the thermal performance.
The ambitious architectural design required the installation of unusually large windows segmented into multiple panels, necessitating the use of strong yet visually slender frame systems.
The home is surrounded by a beautiful, mature garden, but the view was constrained by small windows. The challenge was to use solutions that would fully open the house to the outside, creating a “wall of glass” effect.
AFTER - Solution

Systems Chosen: Schüco AWS 70.HI & Schüco ASS 70.HI

Leading aluminum systems were used for the project, meeting the Investor’s demands:

  • Windows (Schüco AWS 70.HI): The Schüco AWS 70.HI high-insulation system was chosen, allowing for the creation of large, segmented windows with characteristic, slender matt black profiles, faithfully reproducing the architect’s vision.
  • Sliding Doors (Schüco ASS 70.HI): The advanced Schüco ASS 70.HI sliding door system was used, enabling the installation of impressive large and heavy sashes while ensuring smooth and quiet operation with minimal frame visibility.
RESULTS

Summary and Key Takeaways

The investment in advanced aluminum joinery in Barnet was a complete success, meeting all the Client’s visual and technical expectations.
